It’s the best Sunday of the month again! 4th Sunday is West Malling Farmers Market day. From 9:30 to 1:30, High Street, West Malling.
UPDATE! See the abso fabbo recipes du month from the head chef at Hengist Restaurant,
Yes. This Sunday. Not the last one of the month. The weather might be clearing, but it’s being a weird year so far so maybe it will be summer snow.
We are hoping the Asparagus might burst forth and be righteously ripe and will recipe du jour it as soon as we know. (It’ll be roast Asparagus. It’s the best way. With black pepper and parmesan. St Delia of Cookingham told me so, all close and personal like.)

This month our charity stall is the Demelza Trust, which is a children’s Hospice in Kent. If we get sunshine at the market lets spread it a bit further, huh?
OK. See you Sunday. Oh, The Country Park is looking stunning at the moment, great for a country walk after lunch, after market….

There’s a different smell at the farmers market this month. As well as the normal smells of fresh produce, bread & food cooking, the smell of success is thick in the air.
It’s now six months since the market was nearly lost due to the borough council withdrawing its funding and the main contactors going bankrupt.

The number of producers has doubled to over forty in the last six months, as have the number of customers.
Also the producers are up to wonderful things:
Meopham Valley Vineyard has won two awards at this years Decanter World Wine Awards. Their Sparkling Rosé 2005 got a Bronze Award and the Sparkling Brut 2004 got a Commended. There were upward of 9,500 entries this year in various styles of wine.
The Posh Pie Company have also been pulling in the awards-Two star gold at The Great Taste Awards and Gold at the British Pie Awards, both for their fish pie using locally caught sustainable fish.
Three silver awards from the British Pig Executive for their Steak and Stilton pie, Rabbit pie and their Chicken Pie.

Low Wood Nursery were presented the Cornwallis Rose bowl at the Kent show for winning the Top Gold and Premier award for Horticultural landscape and design.
Winterdale Cheese are very happy with the comments of Si King of Hairy Bikers fame. On tasting the cheese he said “cheese with attitude, oh, ahh, wow!” he was lost for words, which is not normally a problem for him.

Finally, the Sevenoaks branch of Amnesty International will be attending this month’s market, they will be selling second hand books to raise money to help with their campaign work on behalf of prisoners in Burma and the Stop Violence Against Women campaign here in the UK.
There is a free pitch at each market for a local charity, organisation or group. This can be used for raising funds or just raising profile. Be quick these are going fast. Any interested parties should contact steve@westmallingfarmersmarket.co.uk or 07876 685853.
Future markets are, October 25th, November 22nd, December 20th, January 24th & February 28th.
