By which he means he hopes to see you at the Farmers Market at West Malling this Sunday, 27th September 2009. The last one of summer, kids are back at school, and although this weekend looks like it’s going to be sunny and warm, the nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling…

Time to start thinking of getting in those Kentish apples, maybe even try some of the very young root crops, definitely time to try some English Wine Nouveaux, ahh…all the delights that an English and Kentish early autumn bring!

Farm made cheese to go with hand baked bread. Marmalade because it is British, and loads of other wonderful things.

See you there.

It’s here again, the West Malling Farmers Market, this Sunday morning, 23rd August.

As I mentioned, the Apple season has begun, but since I wrote I’ve talked to a couple of apple growers who think this is a great season. Great for big, juicy crisp Kentish Apples, which are just the thing on a summers day.

And of course the BBQ products will be there, the organic wines, the cakes, the fab bread. All you want in a busy Farmers market, this Sunday, West Malling, Kent.

AND! Just to get the old brain cells going, Kent Adult Education are having a stall to let you know what they are offering this year in their great range of courses. These include, (deep breath), ..art, pottery, stained glass, jewellery making, life drawing, walking, dance (including belly dancing) and personal development courses (assertiveness, counselling courses, bookkeeping, computer skills) and ITEC and complementary therapy courses. So something for everyone.

The recent report from the Food Standards authority about organic food has predictably caused a fuss in the papers.
“Organic food no good! “ Daily Moonshine.
“Tofu for toffs” Daily More Dross.
Now, it’s a 209 page report and we are not going to summarize it here. But one thing should be pointed out:
Why do most people eat organic food? Easy. So they have food without masses of pesticides and nasties on it.
And does the FSA study look at that? Hell no. From the report itself:
“This review does not address contaminant content (such as herbicide, pesticide and fungicide residues) of organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs.”
(Executive Summary, p2, para1).

Which means the report had nothing to say about pesticides and nasties on food.

So if you want great tasting food, from local sources that doesn’t have pesticides, herbicides etc in vast quantities, West Malling Farmers Market is where you should be. Fruit and veg, breads, cheeses, meats all lovingly raised, made and cared for in a way you’ll be happy with.
